Also in 1988, the first Wal-Mart Supercenter was introduced in Washington, Missouri. The supercenter concept features everything contained in an average Walmart store, and added optical center, one-hour photo processing lab, a tire and oil change shop, portrait studio. The stores also contained numerous alcove shops such as banks, hair and nail salons, cellular telephone stores, video rental stores, and fast food outlets.
What’s more, Walmart is creating new formats uniquely designed for cities. The new Walmart Neighborhood Market, for example, is only 40,000 square feet while the so-called Walmart Express stores are only 15,000 square feet. Walmart has even opened two college stores, at Georgia Tech in Atlanta and at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Each of these stores is less than 5000 square feet in size.
But at least two of the factories on the list have continued to send massive shipments of sports bras and girls' dresses to Walmart stores in recent months, according to interviews and U.S. customs records.
