I wasn't sure what the difference between a house fly and a black fly was so I asked Josh for more information on that. Basically black flies bite and house flies may buzz around your head, table and food but they don't bite. ThermaCELL's entomologist sent back the following:
"House flies are gray, approximately 1/4 inch long, with four dark longitudinal stripes on top of the thorax, or middle body region. The mouth parts of the house fly are adapted for sponging up liquids. They cannot bite." (University of Delaware)
"A black fly (sometimes called a buffalo gnat, turkey gnat, or white socks) is any member of the family Simuliidae. Most black flies gain nourishment by feeding on the blood of other animals, although the males feed mainly on nectar. They are usually small, black or gray, with short legs, and antennae. They are a common nuisance for humans." (Ohio State University)
Christie, Thank you for your comment. Thermacell has been tested to effectively repel mosquitoes, black flies and no-see-ums (it also repels sand flies) but Thermacell does not work against house flies, deer flies or horse flies. Could the flies that bothered you while Thermacell was in use be house flies oranother variety of fly that is not the black fly? If there were definitely back flies that bothered you may I ask if the the repellent mat turned from blue to white within 3-4 hours of use? This is how you can tell if Thermacell is operating correctly. I am back in the office and able to answer and further comments promptly.
